Sorting through the pieces on my clothing rack, it dawned on me just how many of my favorite items are pre-loved/secondhand. As a newbie to slow fashion, I found myself caught up in a cycle of thinking that I needed to buy new pieces in order to properly support the movement, but in actuality, the core of slow fashion is being ethically and sustainably responsible. This doesn’t have to just mean purchasing every item new from a sustainable brand, it could also be supporting your local thrift store or sourcing pieces that may not be sustainably produced secondhand.
There are so many ways that we can be more intentional to ensure that we love the pieces that we wear, which leads to me to today’s post, 5 Great Online Stores To Buy Second Hand Clothes. If you’re new to the idea of curating your closet, I highly recommend checking out some of the sites down below.
My Favorite Places To Buy Secondhand
Poshmark
Poshmark is a personal favorite of mine to find items that I couldn’t buy elsewhere. I typically shop here if there’s a fast fashion item I’m in love with but would like to buy in a more sustainable environment. I don’t buy fast fashion often, but if I’m in love with a piece (like my Madewell Linen Shorts), I’ll search for it here. I love being able to support an actual person and I’ve sold some of my own pieces on here as well!
Adored Vintage
My style is usually season-less. I tend to gravitate towards pieces that are comfortable and well-tailored, but every now and then I’ll fall in love with a silhouette or style that falls outside of that. This summer with the whole cottage-core trend, I fell hard for more romantic pieces. Cue Adored Vintage, they sell both new and vintage items with the prettiest patterns and styles.
Etsy
Not many people know this, but I used to own a little hand knit goods shoppe on Etsy back in college. Nothing too fancy, just items like baby hats and scarves that I’d make in my spare time. I’ve always loved the platform for giving smaller businesses more reach and I’ve bought so many new and used pieces off of here. If you’d like a list of my favorite vintage Etsy stores, let me know!
The RealReal
I don’t speak or post too often about luxury items on the blog, but I do enjoy splurging every now and then. When I do, I like to make my purchases through the RealReal, an online luxury consignment site. Items on their site are pre-loved and checked for authenticity prior to being accepted.
ThredUp
Similar to Poshmark, I loved having the freedom to order a ThredUp kit whenever I purged items from my closet when I lived back on the mainland. I’d order the kit, fill it with my items and send it back with a prepaid label. ThredUp would then either accept the item for resale or donate it on my behalf, a win-win! Unfortunately, if you live in Hawaii, the option to do this isn’t currently available, but you can still purchase gently used clothing from them and they have a pretty great men and children section as well!
